The National Council for Home Safety and Security has named Madison as one of the safest cities in Alabama. In their 2017 list of safest cities, Madison ranks 14th.
Along with this announcement of being one of the safest cities, the Madison Police Department is releasing its
Annual Report.
MPD publishes an annual department activity report to keep our citizens informed on the state of the police department and the impact we are having on public safety in our city. This document informs and educates the public about the structure, function, and services offered by the Madison Police Department. The report provides an objective, data-driven review of criminal activity, driving behaviors, and the impact that our officers have in trying to reduce and keep those numbers low.
The Annual Report also highlights some of the programs that the agency has developed to detect and deter crime, or foster relationships with a cross-section of the public. This includes information about the Text-to-Protect Tip Line, Kids’ Camp, and the Reserve Program.
"We are extremely proud of our entire police department and the other public safety agencies that ensure our residents, business owners, and visitors feel safe within Madison." said Mayor Paul Finley. "Police officer's jobs across the country have become more dangerous. I appreciate what our men and women do hourly to keep us not only feeling safe, but being safe."
To identify the safest cities in Alabama, the National Council for Home Safety & and Security reviewed the most recent FBI Crime Report statistics (which is part of the MPD annual report) along with their own population data and internal research. They eliminated any cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI and removed cities with populations under 5,000. The violent and property crime rate variables were then weighted and reformatted from crime per 100,000 to crime per 1,000 persons.
