Ordinance NO. 2015-50 Grounds Regulations for City of Madison Cemeteries
On April 5, 2016 Madison will begin enforcing Ordinance NO. 2015-50. In part, this ordinance prohibits ornamentation such as solar lights, animal figurines, concrete benches, and figures, hanging decorations, lawn furniture, vases, urns, and any small items that must be removed/replaced when mowing. The decorative items cause hazards as small flying objects from mowers and weed eaters that can injury employees or damage property. Some of these items/decorations block the designated walking areas in the cemeteries, causing tripping hazards to the public visiting the cemeteries.
Approved in February 2015, Ordinance No. 2015-50 first required the posting of two clearly visible signs in each of Madison’s three city cemeteries. Signage has been posted since October 2015.
On March 1, 2016 Public Works crews will begin collecting prohibited ornamentation. The items will be placed in a central location for residents to retrieve until April 5th at which time all remaining items will be properly disposed.
