[ARCHIVED] Fireworks Safety Tips from the Madison Fire Department

Fireworks Safety Tips

The Fourth of July is a time for celebration. After all, it is the birthday of our great nation. For many, it will be a time of grilling hamburgers and hot dogs, smoking barbecue, and fireworks. Unfortunately, this last activity often leads to anything but a celebration.

Each Fourth of July, thousands of people, most often children and teens are injured while using fireworks. While this occurs year after year, few people understand or recognize these risks. Madison Fire & Rescue reminds you that fireworks are not toys and often lead to devastating burns, fires, and even death. In a typical year, more fires are reported on Independence Day than any other day, with over half of those fires being directly related to fireworks. With the typical dry conditions we experience during the summer months, there is no reason to think that this year will be any different. It is with this in mind, that we ask you to leave the fireworks to the professionals.

The City of Madison is once again sponsoring a fantastic, family-oriented celebration at Dublin Park. The all day event will culminate with a huge fireworks show. We encourage you to visit the city website for more information on this fun-filled venue. While attending, please say hello to our firefighter/paramedics there. They will be glad to answer any safety related questions you may have. So come see us, enjoy the show, and let’s keep the Fourth of July a reason to celebrate!
