They say “Preparation is the key to success.” And the City of Madison is experiencing success across the community! Particularly in the downtown district where the Garner Street extension project is open for business. In cooperation with Madison City Schools, establishing a plan for the new Journey Middle School took coordination, forward thinking and consideration.
Garner Street now connects to Sullivan via LIfe Way, running adjacent to Journey Middle and the City Schools stadium, past Homeplace Park and on to Martin Street in Historic Downtown Madison. Infrastructure partnership was key in the success of the project. The plans for the project anticipated traffic before and after school hours, and the extension of Garner allows for easier ingress and egress from Journey Middle at those peak traffic times. Improved routes for bus transit from the City Schools transportation center was also considered in the infrastructure plan. Furthermore, the project added a retention pond that the City of Madison's skilled Engineering Department studied to allow for better water drainage in the area.
Overall, this infrastructure supports walkability in the area with a pathway running alongside Garner Street, creating a connected and safe pedestrian-focused area that extends our downtown space. So set those family outing plans - attend a game at the stadium and enjoy a stroll to downtown for shopping and dining. Or visit Homeplace Park for live music!
As the City of Madison matures, focused and planned projects regarding infrastructure and quality of life remain the priority.
