Law requires drivers to change lanes or slow down for vehicles with flashing emergency lights.
The State of Alabama “Move Over Law” is now in effect requiring drivers to change lanes or slow down 15 MPH under the posted speed limit while passing all emergency vehicles, not just “law enforcement”, while they are on the side of the road. These vehicles will include any vehicle with flashing emergency lights, including ambulance, fire trucks and wreckers. This law is to keep all emergency vehicle operators as safe as possible while performing emergency services.
If drivers aren’t able to change lanes, they will be required to slow down to 15 mph below the posted speed limit. On two-lane roads, drivers will only be required to follow the slow-down rule. Violators will receive a $25 fine, plus court costs, which vary from county to county but in Madison will cost you $149.00.
Please pay special attention to this new law and help keep our emergency personnel safe on our roads.
