[ARCHIVED] Dangers and Precautions Regarding Frozen Ponds and Lakes

The City of Madison Fire Department reminds citizens, especially children, to exercise safety at all times around the frozen ponds scattered throughout the city. Ice may appear solid but can be thin over deeper water or around air pockets formed under the ice. With children being out of school, many may be tempted to get out on the frozen ponds creating an extremely dangerous, yet preventable, situation. All parents are encouraged to discuss and educate their children about these dangers and remind them that looks can be deceiving when it comes to frozen bodies of water.
