What is GIS?

A GIS (Geographic Information System) has been defined in many ways. One definition that sums it up is: a technology that integrates hardware, software, and data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information. (ESRI) Simply put, a GIS = maps data and all hardware and software associated with it. GIS can be used to analyze spatial (locationally defined) and attribute relationships to assist City Officials in the decision making process.

The Engineering Department is responsible for the capture, maintenance, and distribution of GIS data to other City departments, governmental entities, and the public. Since GIS is continually evolving, the capture of all geographic features within the City and their associated attributes is an important goal to assist in the planning and design of City infrastructure.
