Council-Manager Special Election

***The City of Madison, with order of the Probate Court, has set the date for voters to decide the future of Madison's municipal form of government. The special election will be held on May 9th, with voters utilizing their regular municipal local election polling places open from 7am to 7pm. 


Absentee ballot applications for the special election will be available April 11th***


Important Dates:

April 24, 2023 - last day to register to vote for the municipal special general election.

April 26, 2023 – Election Workers (Officials)- Training school

May 2, 2023 - Last day to receive absentee application by mail.

May 3, 2023 – Public testing of Electronic Vote Count Machines

May 4, 2023 - Last day for a voter to apply for a regular absentee ballot by hand. (City Clerk Office)

May 8, 2023 - Last day, up to the close of business, for a voter to apply for and submit an emergency absentee ballot.

May 8, 2023 - Last day, up to the close of business, for a voter to hand-deliver absentee ballot.

May 8, 2023 - If an absentee ballot is returned by mail, it must be postmarked by May 8, and received by noon on May 9, 2023, election Day.

May 9, 2023 – Election Day – Polls open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 7:00 p.m.

Election Manager

The City Clerk of the City of Madison acts as the election manager for municipal elections.

Frequency of Elections

Section 11-46-21, Code of Alabama 1975 provides that regular municipal elections in cities and towns shall be held on the fourth Tuesday in August 1984 and quadrennially thereafter.

The next municipal election will be held in 2025.

Special Elections

Special elections may be called by the City Council and are held on dates set forth in the Code of Alabama.

Terms

In Madison, the Mayor and Council members are directly elected to serve a four-year term.
