A Little About The Mayor

Sandy was born in Orange, Texas, the son of two World
War II Navy veterans. He lived in Orange until he went
to college at Georgia Tech. He received a Bachelor of Aerospace
Engineering degree from Tech in 1968 and a Master of Science
in Industrial Management in 1970. He enrolled in the Reserve
Officer Training Corps program at Tech and was commissioned
a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army in 1968.
He was named a Distinguished Military Graduate. As a
graduate student he worked as a graduate teaching assistant
at Tech and as an engineer at NASA?s Marshall Space Flight
Center (MSFC). After completion of his military
service in 1971, Sandy returned to Huntsville and worked for
several aerospace contractors until joining the Army Missile
Command (MICOM) in 1972. He worked as an engineer and operations
research analyst with MICOM until transferring to MSFC
in 1980. Sandy worked for 18 years as a structures and
propulsion engineer at MSFC until he transferred to payload
project management. He worked as a program and project
manager on space payload development and propulsion research
until his retirement from NASA MSFC in October, 2004. He
has been serving as Mayor of Madison, Alabama since October
, 2004.Sandy and his wife Melissa have been residents of Madison
since 1985. They have one daughter Elizabeth who is a professional
graphic designer. Sandy and Melissa are actively involved
in the community as volunteers. Melissa is a member of
Master Gardeners of North Alabama and does regular volunteer
work at the Botanical Garden. Sandy and Melissa are members
of Friends of the Library, and he is a part-time volunteer
at the Botanical Garden. Sandy is also a Trustee of The
Nature Conservancy of Alabama.
