The Madison Municipal Court is a trial court of limited jurisdiction over criminal prosecutions. Although considered to be a part of the Unified Judicial System of Alabama, the municipal court is funded entirely by the municipality. The municipal court exercises jurisdiction over violations of municipal ordinances occurring within the city limits and shares jurisdiction with district court for misdemeanor violations of state law upon adoption by the municipal governing body. Functions include management of all pending cases filed with the court; maintenance of all court records; collection and remittance of all fines, forfeitures, court costs, and restitution; issuance of subpoenas, summons, warrants, and certified copies of court records; and provision of criminal complaint services to the public.
