Specific duties of the job:
Safely operate wheelchair accessible van with lift and other city vehicles; assist riders loading & unloading bus; maintain cleanliness of vehicle; inspect vehicle daily before departure & report potential problems to supervisor; maintain records of clients transported daily, mileage and other required records; plans & prioritizes daily routes of clients based on schedule of activities and requests; establish good rapport with clients, always acting in a courteous and confident manner; projects a positive image of the City and its facilities at all times.
Skills candidate must have:
Safely operate automatic and/or standard transmission vehicle; knowledge of safe driving practices, laws, rules and regulations related to operation of commercial vehicles; working knowledge of the City and Madison and surrounding areas to develop an efficient route schedule of transportation for clients; ability to become CPR and First Aid Certified; ability and knowledge to adequately inspect equipment to insure proper and safe operation of vehicles; excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to speak English; ability to speak other languages would be a plus; ability to communicate orally with coworkers, supervisors, senior adults and disabled citizens in order to relay information and provide instructions; ability to communicate well with hearing challenged clients; reading skills to read and comprehend written directions, procedures and signs; writing skills to complete forms and reports legibly and accurately and to prepare transportation and maintenance logs, accident reports and records; ability to remain calm and function in high stress situations; ability to work safely in high traffic areas and around moving vehicles; ability to deal calmly and effectively with difficult and belligerent persons.
Education candidate must have:
High School Diploma or GED preferred; Must have Alabama Drivers License and Alabama Class D Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with no restrictions (other than corrective lens) and a good driving record. Must maintain an excellent driving record and ability to be fully insured under City’s insurance, and record may be periodically checked by the City; Strong background record required, due to accessibility to elderly and/or disabled citizens.
Experience candidate must have:
Experience in the operation of a passenger transport vehicle; experience operating vehicles to transport senior or disabled passengers preferred; reading skills to understand written instructions; strong work history of dependability and performance.
Physical requirements for this position:
See well enough to operate a vehicle, read, write reports, and safely operate a tranquilizer weapon; Hear and speak well enough to communicate by radio, telephone; Ability to run, maneuver quickly and apply physical strength in the apprehension and containment of animals; Lift and move 5 pound – 20 pound animals on a routine basis; Lift live and dead weight up to 50 pounds without assistance; Dexterity of limbs, hands and fingers to write and use a wide range of personal protection devices; Tolerance to perform under adverse conditions.
