Historic Significance

1869 City of Madison is incorporated
1869-1940s Bucket brigades and military surplus trucks for fire fighting by volunteers
1948 Mayor Walton Hughes purchases first official Fire truck
1948-1968 Madison Fire Department evolves through city planning, water systems, and volunteer firefighters
1968 City of Madison begins construction on Fire Station #1 located on Sullivan Street just north of Palmer Road
1969 Madison hires its first full-time paid Firefighter, Chief Charles Wallace whom joined as a volunteer in 1964
1975 Madison becomes a combo department, of volunteer and paid firefighters
1976 Fire Department becomes first responders to medical calls
1987 Station #2 is built on Hughes Road just south of Highway 72
1996 Station #1 moves to new building located at corner of Mill Road and Hughes Road
1999 Chief Wallace retires as chief after 30 years of full-time and five years as a volunteer
2000 Madison hires Ralph Cobb as its new Chief
2003 Fire Station #3 is built on County Line Road just south of Highway 72
