[ARCHIVED] Christmas Parade and Capers Event

The City of Madison will be full of the holiday spirit this weekend with the annual Christmas Parade, Christmas Capers, and Night at the Movie showing The Polar Express!  Here are a few reminders for what to expect.

The parade route will begin promptly at 5pm Saturday evening at Plaza Blvd and travel South on Hughes Road, wrapping up at Insanity Complex. Madison Police Department wants patrons to be aware that the barricades and traffic cones will not be moved until the last parade float passes. Do not move barricades, and be aware of police direction if driving in the area. This is a new route that will alleviate traffic concerns downtown.

Sunday is another chance to enjoy the season with an annual event that honors Madison's history - The Christmas Capers. The event will start at 4pm in historic downtown near Hughes Hardware store on Main Street. During years of the Great Depression in the early 1930s, 'Doc' Hughes started a holiday tradition dubbed the “Christmas Chicken Capers.” On Christmas Eve, Hughes would toss live chickens from the roof. The chickens had tags attached to their legs, and people could redeem the tags for prizes in Hughes’ store. Anyone who caught the chickens received the prizes and kept the chicken for Christmas dinner. The Historic Preservation Society has continued the annual tradition this year with rubber chickens tossed from Hughes Hardware with prize tags attached.

Following the Christmas Capers, take a chance to explore the new Home Place Park for a free showing of The Polar Express, presented by Torch Technologies. Movie will begin at 5:30pm. Parking is available at the Madison City Schools Stadium, with the park near the new Avenue apartments. Food trucks will be available.

Bring the family for a full weekend of merriment all ages can enjoy!
